Jyvaskyla vive e respira la vita da studente: con una delle percentuali di studenti più alte della Finlandia, l'intera città è organizzata intorno al campus, alla vita economica e al lago. La vita da studente qui è intensa per le dimensioni della città, gestita tramite lo student union JYY e la cultura delle tute haalarit. Il porto di Lutakko ospita il club e la sala concerti principale, Ilokivi è l'amatissimo ristorante-bar studentesco sul campus, e il calendario tocca il picco con il Vappu ogni maggio. D'estate ci si sposta verso il lago e i weekend in cottage.

Jyvaskyla è nettamente più economica della capitale, quindi metti in conto circa 700, 1.000 euro al mese con affitto incluso. Jyvaskyla è abbastanza piccola da poter essere attraversata a piedi o in bici, ed è esattamente quello che fanno la maggior parte degli studenti tutto l'anno. Gli autobus locali Linkki coprono il resto con una carta Waltti, con tariffe studenti una volta registrato. I percorsi lungo il lago rendono la bici un piacere dalla primavera all'autunno, e la stazione dei treni e il terminal degli autobus sono centrali per le gite più lontane.

JYU organizza semestri autunnale (settembre-dicembre) e primaverile (gennaio-maggio) divisi in periodi, con una solida reputazione internazionale in educazione e scienze dello sport. L'insegnamento è informale e indipendente, per lo più in inglese a livello di scambio, con parecchi progetti di gruppo. Le ore di lezione sono leggere, quindi il carico di lavoro spetta a te gestirlo.
Quello che ti serve dipende interamente dal tuo passaporto. Gli studenti UE e SEE non hanno bisogno di alcun visto o permesso di soggiorno; devi solo registrare il tuo diritto di soggiorno presso Migri se resti oltre tre mesi, ed è veloce ed economico. Questa è tutta la storia per la maggior parte degli studenti in scambio europei.
Tutti gli altri (non UE) fanno domanda per un permesso di soggiorno per studio tramite Migri prima di arrivare, mostrando la lettera di ammissione, la prova di fondi (circa 560 euro al mese, quasi 6.720 euro all'anno) e l'assicurazione sanitaria. Fai domanda online, prenota un appuntamento biometrico presso una missione finlandese o VFS, e comincia presto perché il processo può richiedere da uno a tre mesi in alta stagione. Una volta qui, registra il tuo indirizzo presso il DVV per far partire tutto.

Il cibo è il classico finlandese, dal pane di segale e il pesce di lago alle girelle alla cannella e il caffè, con il mercato coperto (Kauppahalli) il posto migliore per uno spuntino. L'architettura di Alvar Aalto è la vera firma culturale, dal campus universitario al teatro, e la Lakeland circostante plasma la vita quotidiana. Sauna e bagno nel lago vanno di pari passo, anche d'inverno.

La Finlandia centrale ti mette a portata di mano delle grandi città del sud e di una natura infinita. Tampere è a un'ora e mezza di treno, Helsinki a circa tre ore, e la stazione sciistica di Himos a poco più di quaranta minuti per i weekend invernali. I parchi nazionali e i cottage della Lakeland sono la vera attrazione d'estate.

Koas is a really efficient website. You have the opportunity to book many different type of appartement (flatshare or single appartement) as well as the size. Also there are multiple student residences. The organisation is really good.
Also, if you're not convinced by Koas, you can still find some appartments to rent for regular prices

I was not much on social life but there are a few bars and a club in the city. You also have a lot of activities offered by JAMK (sportwise) and JAMKO (students association -Trips (sweden, lapland, latvia), sportive event like hockey matches...)

If you're interested in discovering the culture, i would recommend the finnish course as well as the "cultural exchange course" (don't remember the exact name) basically you are paired with another student and you learn eahc other language and culture. I would also recommend the financial management course as well as the international marketing course.

The campus is pretty family like. Finnish are really kind and don't hesitate to ask if you have any issues. Also, the registration is pretty easy. You just have to be careful to the Finnish identity number you'll need to get. (they make sure it's not too terrible to get).

The city by itself offers a lot of opportunitiers (forests). You are 3h away from Helsinki which is a really nice city to visit for a few days. Also JAMKO offers a lot of opportunites to travel during your semester.

The cost of living is pretty expensive food wise especially food. About housing you can find really good appartements for low prices. Regarding security, you have nothing to stress about. If you come during Fall semester, be aware of temperatures which can decrease fast.

It was nice because I met other people, in fact most people come to this residence so you don't feel alone. However, even if it's cheap, the accommodations are not clean so you shouldn't expect something very clean. If I had to choose again, I would go to the same residence because for the price it's still pretty good, and you stay with people you know and you meet other people. In any case, Airbnb or others are quite expensive.

I did a lot of trips from Jyvaskyla. It was easier to plan but for some countries, you still had to plan in advance to be sure not to pay too much. I went to Helsinki, Lapland, Warsaw, Stockholm and Budapest.

Transport is ok, there are quite a few buses that you can take. What we used the most was the DOTT, because it's cheap and easy to access. The cost of living in general is quite expensive, but you can find food stores like LIDL at reasonable prices. However, it's still an expensive city compared to others. The city is quite safe

It was convenient because the school allowed us to get an apartment directly thanks to soihtu. We all lived together, friendly. There are quite a few things like a gym, a restaurant, saunas, a billiard room, free laundry machines in the buildings. Afterwards, the experience also depends on the building you live in. I did a semester in the Q building, it was very good but once in the M building for the second semester it was less fun.

Every Wednesday night we were at Révolution, a bar in the city center. Drinks are 2 euros on Wednesdays. It was nice, lots of students, especially French ones. For clubs, we went to Escape, which is next to Révolution; everything is at that crossroads anyway.

You will not be able to choose the same options twice in a row. I started with finance and management in the first semester, and in the second, I did cross-cultural and leadership. My favorites were finance and leadership. I recommend them.

The campus is nice. There were quite a few sports classes offered: muscle strengthening, Zumba, yoga, Pilates. We kept busy with all that. The day we started, we were supposed to have students from the school come and give us a tour of the campus, but they never came. And in our classes, 90% of the time, we were all French people in the same class. I find it a shame

To live your best life in Jyvaskyla, go in September and enjoy the lakes and swimming. You have to enjoy the simple things. We used to fish to keep ourselves busy, and we did a lot of sports.
