Rennes is Brittany youthful capital - a medieval half-timbered centre, two big universities and legendary Thursday nights, all an hour from Saint-Malo and Mont-Saint-Michel. It is compact, cheap and one of France most liveable student cities.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Rennes: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Rennes. In the meantime, ask the Rennes group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Rennes packs a remarkable student density into a compact, walkable city: two universities and a cluster of grandes ecoles give it a genuinely young feel. The half-timbered medieval centre is gorgeous, the tech and research scene is strong, and Brittany coast and countryside are on the doorstep. It regularly ranks among France best cities for student life and quality of living.

  • One of the highest student-to-resident ratios in France, so the city feels young.
  • Saint-Malo and Mont-Saint-Michel are both about an hour away.
  • Paris is only 1h25 by TGV, making weekend visits easy.

Rennes lives for the jeudi soir - Thursday night, when Place Sainte-Anne and the surrounding lanes fill with students before the weekend exodus home. The bars around Place des Lices and Rue Saint-Michel (nicknamed the rue de la Soif) are cheap and rowdy. December brings the Trans Musicales, a major music festival, and ESN Rennes keeps internationals busy year-round.

  • Place Sainte-Anne on a Thursday night is the beating heart of student Rennes.
  • Rue Saint-Michel - the local rue de la Soif - for cheap, packed bars.
  • Catch the Trans Musicales festival in December; follow ESN Rennes for trips and events.

Rennes is affordable and comfortably within the French band - budget roughly 780 to 1,100 euros a month. Shared rooms go for 350 to 480 euros, APL applies, and the compact size keeps transport costs low. Saturday Marche des Lices is a cheap food goldmine, and CROUS canteens serve full meals at around 3.30 euros.

  • Colocation rooms typically 350 to 480 euros; claim APL via caf.fr to cut rent.
  • The STAR youth transit pass is cheap - get a Korrigo card in week one.
  • Shop Saturday Marche des Lices, one of France largest food markets.

Rooms are reasonably priced but demand spikes each September, so search early. CROUS residences cluster near the Beaulieu (Rennes 1 and INSA) and Villejean (Rennes 2) campuses; private colocations turn up on leboncoin and La Carte des Colocs. The central old town is lovely but pricier. Use the free Visale guarantee if you lack a French garant.

  • Beaulieu for Rennes 1 and INSA students; Villejean for Rennes 2 and medicine.
  • Search leboncoin and La Carte des Colocs; secure Visale at visale.fr.
  • Ask the Studcasa Rennes group about rooms opening up between semesters.

The STAR network runs two fully automatic metro lines (a and b) plus buses, and the compact centre is quick on foot. Line b, opened in 2022, links the two university campuses across the city. Velo STAR bikes cover the rest. Under-26 students get a discounted transit subscription loaded onto the Korrigo card.

  • Metro line b connects the Villejean and Beaulieu campuses - handy if you switch sites.
  • Load a youth subscription onto the Korrigo card instead of paying per ride.
  • The centre is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes.

Rennes splits its two universities by field: Rennes 1 for science, law, economics and medicine, and Rennes 2 for humanities, arts, social sciences and sport. Around them sit strong schools - INSA and CentraleSupelec for engineering, Sciences Po Rennes, and Rennes School of Business. The city is a major digital and telecoms research hub. Teaching uses the standard CM-and-TD format.

  • Rennes 1 (Beaulieu) for sciences; Rennes 2 (Villejean) for humanities and arts.
  • A strong tech and telecoms research base, with INSA and CentraleSupelec on hand.

What you need depends entirely on your nationality. EU/EEA/Swiss students need no visa and can just enrol. Non-EU students on an exchange over 90 days apply for a VLS-TS student long-stay visa before arriving, then validate it online within three months and pay a small OFII tax; under 90 days you may only need a short-stay Schengen visa or none at all.

Budget time for the admin marathon: you will want a French bank account, proof of accommodation, health cover (EHIC for Europeans, or enrolment in French social security), and civil-liability insurance. Book prefecture and OFII steps the moment you can, because slots vanish.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa, just enrol
  • Non-EU, over 90 days, VLS-TS long-stay student visa, validated online after arrival
  • Proof of ~€615/month funds usually required
  • Get civil-liability insurance (assurance responsabilite civile) before term

Brittany means crepes and galettes: the savoury buckwheat galette folded around egg, cheese and ham, washed down with a bowl of cider. Save room for kouign-amann, the buttery caramelised pastry, and far breton. The Marche des Lices on Saturday morning is one of the country biggest and best, and the place to graze your way through Breton produce.

  • Eat a galette-saucisse from a street stall and a proper creperie meal with cider.
  • Marche des Lices on Saturday - go hungry and try the local oysters and galettes.
  • Take home a kouign-amann, Brittany gloriously buttery pastry.

The historic centre around Place Sainte-Anne and Place des Lices is the postcard Rennes of half-timbered houses and nightlife. Thabor-Saint-Helier, by the beautiful Parc du Thabor, is greener and more upscale. Villejean (west) and Beaulieu (east) are the student campus districts, cheaper and practical, while Sud-Gare around the station is modern and well-connected.

  • The medieval centre for nightlife and charm; Thabor for green, quieter streets.
  • Villejean and Beaulieu for cheap rooms right by campus.
  • Sud-Gare for modern flats near the TGV station.

Brittany is your playground. Saint-Malo, the walled corsair city with tidal beaches, is an hour by train; Mont-Saint-Michel about the same by bus. The seaside resort of Dinard, medieval Dinan and the Arthurian forest of Broceliande are all close. Further out, Nantes is 75 minutes and Paris just 1h25 by TGV. The rugged Breton coast rewards any weekend you give it.

  • Saint-Malo by train (about 1 hour) for ramparts and tidal swimming.
  • Mont-Saint-Michel by direct bus (about 1h15) - go early to beat the crowds.
  • Broceliande forest for Arthurian legend and easy hiking.

Embrace the jeudi soir but know that Rennes empties at weekends as locals head home, so plan your own trips then. Sort bank, APL and SIM in your first fortnight, and always greet with Bonjour. Bring waterproofs - Breton weather is changeable and a sunny morning can turn to drizzle by lunch.

  • Use weekends for coast trips, since much of the student crowd goes home.
  • Pack proper rain gear for the changeable Breton climate.
