Klaipėda is Lithuania's third largest city and its only major seaport, an ice free harbour on the Baltic coast that has run since medieval times under names including Memel. Around 161,000 people live here, small enough to cross by bike yet anchored by Klaipėda University, founded in 1991, and the English taught LCC International University. The Curonian Spit and its dunes sit a short ferry ride from the Old Town, and the seaside resort of Palanga is close by, so sea air is part of daily life rather than a weekend plan.
