Nice is France's fifth largest city, a Mediterranean port of nearly 360,000 people whose winter resort core, built up for European aristocracy from the 19th century, earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021. Université Côte d'Azur, formed in 2019 from the merger of the old University of Nice Sophia Antipolis with several grandes écoles, now teaches around 35,000 students, a fifth of them international. Add the nearby Sophia Antipolis technology park, mountains rising straight behind the coast, and a genuinely mild climate, and Nice offers a rare mix of a serious university city and an actual holiday destination.
