Jaén is a city of around 112,000 people at the foot of the Sierra de Jabalcuz in Andalusia, surrounded by the largest olive growing region on the planet. Its Renaissance cathedral, built between 1570 and 1802, holds a relic known as the Holy Face, while the Castle of Santa Catalina crowns the hill above the old town, built after the Christian conquest of 1246. The University of Jaén, founded in 1993, enrols close to 17,000 students across eight faculties and schools, mainly on the Las Lagunillas campus, with a second campus in Linares.
