Metro Manila packt Top-Unis, quirlige Malls und Nightlife in ein chaotisches, aber aufregendes Gewusel, mit den Inseln und Stränden des Landes direkt vor der Tür. Es ist intensiv und vom Verkehr geplagt, aber kaum ein Ort ist herzlicher oder günstiger.
Englisch ist Amtssprache, Vorlesungen und Alltag sind also easy zu meistern.
Billige Inlandsflüge bringen dich in kurzer Zeit nach Palawan, Boracay und Cebu.
Studenten- und Sozialleben kreisen um Makatis Poblacion-Viertel, die Bars von Bonifacio Global City (BGC) und die Uni-Zonen von Quezon City und der Taft Avenue. Frag die Manila-Gruppe auf Studcasa, welche Gegenden nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit sicher und fun sind.
Manila ist nach europäischem Maßstab günstig, Streetfood, Transport und geteilte Condos kosten wenig, die meisten Studierenden leben locker im mittleren Preisband des Landes. Miete in einer modernen Condo in Makati oder BGC ist der größte Kostenpunkt; lokal essen und Grab nutzen hält die Alltagskosten winzig. Importierte Waren und Western-Bars sind da, wo die Preise klettern.
Ein Teller Adobo oder Sisig mit Reis in einer Carinderia kostet nur ein bis zwei Euro.
Teil dir eine Condo in Quezon City oder Makati, um die Miete zu splitten und im mittleren Preisband zu bleiben.
Nutz eine Beep-Karte für billige Zugfahrten und Grab für günstige Fahrten von Tür zu Tür.
Die meisten Studierenden teilen sich möblierte Condos in Makati, BGC oder Quezon City (nahe UP und Ateneo), oder Zimmer nahe der Taft Avenue für DLSU und UST. Condo-Sharing über Facebook-Gruppen und Makler ist der Standard, und Pool, Fitnessraum und Sicherheitsdienst sind Standardausstattung. Nähe zu deinem Campus ist wegen des Verkehrs extrem wichtig.
Durchsuch Facebook Marketplace und Condo-Sharing-Gruppen, und poste in der Studcasa-Manila-Gruppe für Zimmer.
Wohn in Lauf- oder kurzer Grab-Distanz zum Campus, der Verkehr macht lange Pendelstrecken brutal.
Check vor der Unterschrift, ob die Condo verlässlich Wasser, Notstrom und Klimaanlage hat.
Der Verkehr in Metro Manila ist legendär, plan also entsprechend. Die Bahnlinien LRT-1, LRT-2 und MRT-3 (mit Beep-Karte getappt) schlagen die Straße, wenn sie in deine Richtung fahren, während Jeepneys und Tricycles kurze lokale Strecken abdecken. Für alles andere ist die Grab-App die verlässliche, klimatisierte Option.
Hol dir eine Beep-Karte für die LRT- und MRT-Züge, die den schlimmsten Verkehr umgehen.
Nutz Grab für Fahrten von Tür zu Tür, wink Jeepneys und Tricycles für billige kurze Strecken heran.
Vermeide Straßenreisen zur Rush Hour (ungefähr 7 bis 10 Uhr und 17 bis 20 Uhr), wann immer möglich.
Metro Manila beherbergt die führenden Unis des Landes: die University of the Philippines Diliman (das nationale Flaggschiff) und Ateneo de Manila in Quezon City, die De La Salle University an der Taft Avenue, und die University of Santo Tomas, die älteste Asiens, gegründet 1611. Unterrichtet wird auf Englisch, und Austausch- und internationale Programme sind gut etabliert.
UP Diliman und Ateneo sitzen in Quezon City; DLSU und UST liegen im eigentlichen Manila.
Wähl deine Unterkunft nahe deinem konkreten Campus, die Metro täglich zu queren ist erschöpfend.
Das hängt komplett von deiner Nationalität ab, behandle das Folgende also als grobe Richtung und bestätige es bei der philippinischen Botschaft und deiner Gastuni. Viele Nationalitäten (die meisten EU-Länder, UK, USA, Kanada, Australien) bekommen 30 Tage visumfrei bei Ankunft, verlängerbar beim Bureau of Immigration. Für einen kurzen Austausch oder ein Nicht-Abschluss-Studium brauchst du meist kein volles Studierendenvisum, du bekommst stattdessen ein Special Study Permit (SSP), organisiert über deine Uni.
Für einen längeren oder abschlussgebundenen Aufenthalt brauchst du das 9(f)-Studierendenvisum, mehr Papierkram: Notenauszug, medizinische Untersuchung, NBI-/Führungszeugnis, und die Bestätigung deiner Gastuni. Fang früh an, philippinische Bürokratie ist langsam und liebt Fotokopien. Deine Austauschkoordination hat das schon mit anderen durchgezogen, also lehn dich stark an sie an.

BGC: modern, fußläufig und beliebt bei internationalen Studierenden.
Quezon City: der Uni-Gürtel, gut für UP- und Ateneo-Studierende.
Manila ist dein Tor zu den Inseln. Tagaytay und der Taal-Vulkan sind ein paar Stunden südlich für eine Flucht in kühlere Luft, die Bergstadt Baguio vier bis fünf Stunden nördlich, und Tauchen bei Anilao in Batangas erreichbar für ein Wochenende. Billige Inlandsflüge öffnen dir Palawan, Boracay, Cebu und Bohol für längere Auszeiten.
Fahr hoch nach Tagaytay für kühlere Luft und Ausblicke auf den Taal-Vulkan.
Flieg günstig nach El Nido (Palawan) oder Boracay für Weltklasse-Strände.
Entkomm der Hitze in Baguio, der von Kiefernwäldern umgebenen Sommerhauptstadt in den Bergen.
Plan dein Leben um den Verkehr herum, wohn nahe am Campus und tim deine Trips, um die Rush Hour zu umgehen. The trips in the Philippines are AMAZING. You can have beautiful beaches, montains, ricefiels... in less than 3 hours in bus. If you want to go to the islands (beauuuutifuuul), you take either take the ferry or the plane depending on how far it is. But the travels are nothing like Manila. Manila is a big city with pollution and trafic. The rest of the Philippines are amazing, we all love it so much. My advice would be to put your classes on 2 or 3 days (it is possible with Ateneo) and travel around every weekend (so afordable and so so nice).

The public transport are not good but there are mototaxi and cabs on the app GRAB (very cheap). Manila has a lot of air pollution, traffic and noise but it is also super secure.

Yes I shared it with another french girl that I did not know and it allowed us to become really close friend. A lot of others exchange students were also in this residence so I made plenty of friends there. The accommodations are great we had a pool, gym and a lot of staff and the price is more than okay.

Every weekend we traveled in the Philippines or abroad. The best places in the Philippines were Boracay, Siargao, Banaue and Tagaytay. Abroad we went to Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan and South Korea and I really recommend those four countries.

I liked the fact that I was with other students from my university so we were always hanging out together and we see each other as family now. Also the place is clean et there is a big pool, which is very cool considering the temperature in Manila. Also the residence is really secured and if you need help with anything you can ask the reception.

It’s not in Manila that you will find the best bars or clubs. To be honest you will never do a cafe terasse at the end of class bc there is none in Manila. But Makati is a good place to go out. You should trust filipinos and go where they advise you to go.

Classes are really simple here, and also the classes are often put online because of the météo or just because the professor prefers to do it online. Also the « Cross cultural communication » class is so cool ! Like you’re just talking and playing with the professor and your classmates to learn about cultural differences and adaptation.

The campus is cool but also sooo big. Like you can be drop off by a taxi inside the university if you want to. Also there is a buddy system so you’re gonna be in touch with a filipino and they are so cool and nice, they are gonna help you for everything !

We traveled almost every weekends from thursday nights to sunday night ! It’s so easy to travel around the Philippines by bus, ferry and planes. Also it’s super easy to travel abroad ! We did 10 days in South Korea and Japan, 10 days in Indonesia, and at the end of the semester 3 weeks in Thailand and 3 weeks in Vietnam.
Ateneo allows that you miss 6 classes per semester for the 1h30 classes (by class) and that you miss 3 classes for the 3h classes. So at the end you can miss 3 weeks of classes.

To be honest Manila is not a good city to live in. The traffic is terrible, it’s noisy, it’s not clean, it’s not really enjoyable to live in Manila. But if you try to adapt and don’t except to much from the city you can live a good experience. It’s also that we didn’t spend so much time in Manila except for school and going out with some friends so we didn’t really experience the life in Manila.
