Rimini is best known as Italy's biggest beach resort, with 15 kilometres of sandy coastline and a tourist economy going back to the first bathing establishment in 1843, but it is also a proper student city. The University of Bologna's Rimini campus enrols close to 4,700 students across 18 degree programmes, 44 percent of them taught in English, focused on tourism, fashion, sport and business. The Romans founded the city as Ariminum in 268 BC, leaving the Arch of Augustus and the Ponte di Tiberio still standing. Renaissance Rimini also gave the world the Tempio Malatestiano, redesigned by Leon Battista Alberti.
