Tübingen is a compact university town of around 92,600 people in Baden Württemberg, roughly 30 kilometres south of Stuttgart, where the University of Tübingen, founded in 1477 as one of the oldest universities north of the Alps, enrols roughly 26,000 students, nearly a third of everyone living here. The medieval old town survived the twentieth century almost untouched, its crooked cobblestone lanes and half timbered houses running down to the Neckar river. Locals punt traditional Stocherkähne boats along the water and fill riverside beer gardens all summer, giving the city one of the youngest average ages anywhere in Germany.
- Expect a compact old town shaped by a university that is a third of the city.
- Walk cobblestone lanes past half timbered houses that survived the war intact.
- Try punting a Stocherkahn on the Neckar once the weather turns warm.
