Leipzig has grown faster than any other German city this century, rebuilding from around 437,000 residents after reunification to more than 615,000 today, a big share of them students. Leipzig University, founded in 1409, anchors a wider academic scene of around 36,000 students once you add the applied sciences, art and music schools nearby. The city carries real history too: the Monday demonstrations that began at St Nicholas Church in October 1989 helped end Communist rule, and its trade fair tradition stretches back to 1190.
